Da's goed nieuws. Liefst zie ik dit soort motorsport. F1, super, maar wel erg ver van de gewone auto's af. DTM is trouwens ook aardig vervreemd technisch, maar iig lijkt alles nog op de straatwagens.

BMW M3 DTM Concept to launch in July

The 2012 motorsport season is looming: As part of the DTM event at Munich’s Olympic Stadium on 16th and 17th July 2011, BMW will present a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car for the first time.

The Concept Car will give the first impression of what next year’s car will look like. This was announced by BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt, who takes over from Mario Theissen on 1st July, at Tuesday’s pre-event DTM press conference in Munich. The presentation will take place in front of media representatives on Friday 15th July, where they will also gain some further insights about the DTM programme of BMW. The car will then be on show to the public at BMW Welt over the remainder of the weekend.

“The fact that the DTM is staging an event in Munich this year is obviously exciting and interesting for us too,” said Marquardt. “The location right on our doorstep gives the term ‘home event’ a whole new meaning in motorsport in the future. Although we will not be competing in 2011, we want to use this opportunity to give DTM fans and BMW Motorsport followers a taste of what they can look forward to next season. For this reason, this event is the logical venue to unveil a BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. Under the motto ‘BMW welcomes DTM’ we will welcome the series to Munich and follow the event at the Olympic Stadium closely. We hope the spectators will also enjoy the many classic BMW cars in action as part of the support programme. Whether the 1987 BMW M3 DTM, the BMW M1 Procar from 1981, or the Mini Rally Monte Carlo car from the 1960s: we think there will be something to suit every taste.“

BMW Welt will be dominated by motorsport throughout the entire DTM race weekend at Munich’s Olympic Stadium. The main attraction will be the BMW M3 DTM Concept Car. In addition, BMW is also exhibiting some of the historic cars, including the 1979 BMW M1 Art Car designed by Andy Warhol, the 1986 BMW 635 CSi and the BMW M3 GTR from 2001. The BMW M3 from the late 1980s, which notched up countless victories and two of the three DTM titles for the brand, will also be on display. With more than 1,500 individual wins to its name, this car is still regarded as one of the most successful touring cars of all time.

Development of the BMW M3 DTM for the coming season has been in full flow since BMW announced its DTM comeback in October last year, and has so far run to plan. The first tests will be performed shortly. BMW will be represented with three strong teams in the DTM in 2012. BMW Team Schnitzer, in action with the BMW M3 GT at the Nürburgring 24 Hours (DE) this weekend, will run two BMW M3 DTM cars, as will BMW Team RBM and BMW Team RMG.

BMW M3 DTM Car Caught Testing

We’re only a week away from BMW Motorsport revealing the 2012 M3 DTM car that will battle it out with the likes of Audi and Mercedes-Benz next year. The 2012 re-entry of the M3 into the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters(German Touring Cars) marks the first time in 20 years that a factory-backed BMW has laid rubber to road in the series.

For those unaware, DTM, in it’s original format, was where the legendary original M3, the E30, cut its teeth by decimating the likes of Mercedes 190E Cosworths, Alfa Romeos and Opels. After many victories and successes, thanks to incredible pairings with drivers like Roberto Ravaglia) in DTM, BMW ultimately decided to bow out of the series due to increasing costs and to focus on larger scale motorsport programs like the European World Touring Car Championship and, eventually, a re-entry into Formula One.

Two decades on, the tables have turned. BMW has withdrawn from Formula One all together and pulled its factory 320Si’s from the World Touring Car Championship( successor to the European Touring Car Championship) to refocus BMW Motorsport’s attention around the M3 and related programs. As such, BMW will bring the E92 M3 back to the new iteration of DTM which promises to refocus series regulations on technologies and performance more akin to series cars’ road-going equivalents.

Starting next season, BMW will find itself going wheel-to-wheel with the Audi A4 and Mercedes-Benz C Class, both of whom have occupied the series for some years now almost exclusively, all powered by massaged V8′s and rear-wheel-drive. The series itself is working towards a more international platform with negotiations underway of bringing a DTM season to a number of U.S.-based road courses and partnering with series’ like NASCAR and Grand AM to find a wider audience.

The picture featured in this article shows that the M3 DTM car looks very unique relative to its sister GT car competing in the ILC and American Le Mans Series – as noted by the substantial aerodynamic aids, low slung suspension, and frighteningly blistered wide body. However, our understanding is that the M3 DTM car will share an engine similar to that of the 4.0L V8 powering the ALMS M3 GT.

Kan niet wachten tot bmw gaat deelnemen.
Was altijd een enorme fan van de DTM maar met de huidige 2 merken is het gewoon stukken minder.
leuk zijn als er nog andere merken mee gaan doen!

...echt helemaal zo worden als het was gaat het helaas niet meer.

...dan moet Alfa (zoals met de 155) en Opel (destijds met de Calibra) ook gewoon weer mee doen.

...laten we dan gelijk het buizenchassis aan de kant gooien en gewoon de productieautos met enkele aanpassingen racen...

De auto's van destijds waren IMO leuker dan de huidige auto's, die meer lijken op F1 auto's met kap.
